Dr R.Balasubramaniam (Balu) is a development activist, social innovator, writer and a leadership trainer. After getting his degree in Medicine, he earned his M.Phil from the Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani. He has a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University. His living habits were greatly influenced by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian monk who lived in the 19th century. At the age of 19, he founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, based on the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (Truth), Seva (Service) and Tyaga (Sacrifice). He has spent the last 29 years of his life in the service of the rural and tribal poor in the forests of India.
He is currently the Frank H T Rhodes Professor at Cornell University and an adjunct Professor at the University of Iowa, USA. He is a Mason Fellow in Public Policy & Management of the Harvard University and was a Fellow at the Hauser Center for Non-Profits, Harvard University. He mainly teaches and lectures on issues related to Leadership, Globalization, Managing and Governing NGOs, Poverty and Development, and Global Health. He has served as the Professor & Head of the Vivekananda Chair in the University of Mysore. He regularly runs leadership workshops for NGOs and corporates, both in India and abroad. He is now associated with the renowned Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development at Mysore. He is part of an anti-corruption movement in Mysore called ‘Mysore against Corruption’. He has traveled widely within and outside the country, promoting the concept of participatory sustainable development that is contextually relevant and culturally appropriate.
He is an adviser and consultant to various organizations working in the fields of health, education, and community development in the country. He is a member of various States and National Committees and a board member / trustee of many NGOs. He has assisted the Lok Ayukta (the anti-corruption agency) of Karnataka in investigating issues of mal-administration and corruption in the health sector and the Public Distribution System of Karnataka.
